song for autumn

hey, look
the shadows are long
and the sun's a paler shade of day
The air is still
and brittle cool
and the leaves rosy up red
and deep-fried brown and gold
before crispy frost
freezes a muddy path cold
and crunching as we march along
train tracks silver threads into gold
before going lead
in the falling halo of a sun
old and winking
early in its sinking
dashed and slashed
with spidery jet trails
and the tails
of brushed aluminum aircraft
or ducks heading south
for warmer climates
looking like the sideways v's
you get on keyboards
or like a crook'd crack
in linoleum
cold like the brass of a trumpet
before pursed lips
blow hot through it
and notes dangle like Christmas lights
or prayer flags snapping on the line
from the end it
and this season it's shawls
and long scarves
hugged around shoulders
arms folded
hands tucked under elbows
wonder where you're going
looking like the queen
of the homecoming dance
on a sidewalk of red noses
and swimming, squinting eyes
boots knee-high
tweed pleated skirt
and faded corduroy jacket
collar pulled up stylish and high
the girl of Ipanema passing by
gone with the breath of a woman blowing into her coffee
with leaves like cigar wrappers caught up
in a pavement tornado
