Mutiny
Our house is beautiful. It has a really high ceiling in the back room; a large, spacious, well-equipped kitchen; a tasteful wooden dining table; a bookshelf with a modest collection of everything from philosophy, history, classics, encyclopaedias and computing text books; and a well-worn typical Aussie sofa.
But when you look closer, look beyond the modern lighting, the arty black bench; beyond the echoing, shiny floorboard, you start to notice the blemishes - temporary, unnecessary scars of everyday life. A couple of smelly socks tarnishing the otherwise inviting sofa; beer bottle tops tossed carelessly onto the carpet next to the mess of video tapes and magazines; and dishes from the week past stacked high in the sink and its surrounding space.
The first step to social reform is the dirty dishes. An effective strategy will involve corrective cleanliness - first by example, then by subtle jokes, with occasional directed comments and followed up with the infrequent use of pleading, anger and demands, only when conditions become unbearable and all other approaches fall on deaf ears.
The next phase of the implementation will include regular vacuuming and wiping of dusty areas, sweeping of floors and tidiness of public areas.
Then comes the installation of tele-screen monitoring...
