Roses and Red Wine...

...would normally be a good combination. I recommend this to any male out there who wants to make sure they do the right thing by their special someone, on any special occasion, be it Valentine's Day, your wedding reception, whatever.

Except when you actually pour the red wine into the roses.

Why would you do that? I hear you ask. Well, we don't have a funnel in our house. So I have been watering the roses I bought Kim on the weekend using an empty wine bottle filled with tap water.

Today that bottle just happened to be sitting next to an already-opened bottle of red. And I obviously wasn't paying adequate attention. I therefore poured probably a whole glass into the (non-transparent) pot in which they are sitting.

I'll keep you posted on how it affects the roses. Who knows, maybe anti-oxidants are as good for flowers as they are for humans. Hmm, I wonder if the roses like the James Busby '99 Shiraz I fed them, or whether they would prefer some of the Leasingham Estate 97 Cab Sav I have covered in dust in the corner...

:) oh no! let's hope the roses appreciate the sultry flavor and full-bodied goodness of an aussie shiraz.
